The day after Christmas!

We had our last day at the markets and finally got some good pictures of the shops and experience altogether. Here are the last pictures of the year from our visit. We went with our friends the Mazie's (Jon & Katie), who are totally amazing and we venture out with the most. Enjoy!

Mine to him! The bell not the bulbs!

Even though this Christmas was different and a little sad, we spent it in wonderful company. Matt and I had comfort in our new friends and kept ourselves busy with building edible homes, drinking, and playing insanely confusing card games. We missed everyone at home, and I was definitely the mopiest of us all, but we had a good time. We each webcammed with our perspective families and cherished every minute. Hopefully the New Year brings us each closer to seeing them as soon as possible, and gives us the chance to explore more.  Until next year every one! :D

Daily life & some thoughts on Christmas

Even though I never really went out at home, I’d like to be home. I miss the kind routines of everyday life. The stress of not getting breaks on time, of running around smiling like an idiot because you love your job. I miss my friends. I miss my family. Sitting at home all day leaves too much time on your hands. The dreariness of it all let’s you reminisce on the past, lets you float along to play with what-if’s and why-not’s. Here in Germany the weather reflects my mood. The clouds are a glowing gray, and can’t really decide if they want to do anything in particular today besides mope at the sky.

I’ve been particularly down about Christmas these past few days and can’t stop thinking about all the wonderful traditions of home. Christmas Eve with the Reyes family, sleeping over at my grandparents, spending the morning opening presents then eating breakfast. Christmas night and afternoons were spent with my in-laws. Such a wonderful joy came in the security of the same itinerary every year. Now we begin our own traditions.

Since I’m home (at the hotel), pretty much every day, I occasionally watch television. Half the channels are in German, and the other half are military commercials and a healthy slush of American daytime shows. This evening while Matt was playing video games, and I was perusing my phone, a commercial about soldiers overseas came on. You would think that I was desensitized to all the military stuff that shows up around here, but it caught me off-guard. The thought that some people are missing their soldiers during this holiday season is heartbreaking. It helped me get a grip on myself, and my time here, and really take the time to reevaluate why I am here, and how lucky I am to have Matt at my side. I guess I avoid thinking about deployment, and as a few friends have pointed out here have said, it’s going to happen. This year I have him though, and I will do everything I can now to make it memorable.

My new mission is set: getting a tree! Thankfully I don’t have to worry about stockings because my Aunt Carm & Uncle Buzz got us covered right before we got on the plane. My grandparents even sent us off with presents to open, which is really sweet of them to do, because as selfish as it is, I want to unwrap something this year. This weekend we will be in Mainz Kastel shopping for the perfect Charlie Brown tree and some stocking stuffers. We aren’t sure what’s really going to happen for Christmas, but I want to buy The Christmas Story so I can watch it on repeat all day (Matt doesn’t know about this plot yet). I also want to go back to the Christmas Markets that we visited last weekend.

For those of you who didn’t know, we did our first German outing not too long ago! We visited the Christmas markets, and I know most of you saw some snippets on facebook through instagram or through the snapshots we took. It was super awesome to be able to go a few blocks off base and immerse yourself in the culture. The markets here are similar to St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin. There are vendors that come out and have homemade items, some Christmas related decorations, or food, or clothing items and some random things like baskets or jewelry. Amongst the vendors were food/drink stations, which served some delicious pork sandwiches and classic Coke in the glass bottles, but what seemed to be the most popular were the alcoholic items. We divulged in hard apple cider but what I want to try next is the warm wine that’s served as well. The drinks come in mugs, and either because people aren’t thieves here, or no one likes the design that much, everyone who gets a mug returns it. They are super crazy about recycling here, which is refreshing.

Anyways, for my family who might want to know, I looked into school this week! I am going to go to school online through the University of Maryland, and once I’ve started and have both feet on the ground I will look for a job. Today as we were getting errands done for Matt, I came across some pamphlets on community services on base and they looked interesting. I’m not making any commitments here, but I think it would be nice to give back to the community if I’m not working. Now the absolute HIGHLIGHT of my week was looking into dog breeds with Matt. The talk has officially begun, and we are getting a dog. Not now because we aren’t even in our own home, but sometime in Spring next year looks like we will have a new addition to our family! <3 So excited.

Last but not least, we have a mailing address and since I can’t post it on here you are more than welcome to email me or call me to get it! Hope all is well back home & all over. If anyone wants to call or email me just for fun, please do! I love talking to people from home.

Here are some photos of the latest adventure!
Entering the Market under a giant unlit flower!

Kinda looks like San Francisco :]

The first days..

I think the nights will be the hardest while I’m here. Not like, nights out partying, or nights when we’re out adventuring the lands, but at night when I’m laying in bed after Matt’s already fallen asleep. It’s the times where I find myself staring off at the stars in the window, wondering if everyone I love is seeing the same stars. It’s bad because I have to remind myself that it’s the middle of their day. I can see my sister at the office folding chips with Lauren, or all my sbux crew dancing behind the counter in a bouncy rhythm that only that store has perfected. My thoughts drift all over, wondering what my best girls are up to, whether Kels is at CafĂ© Art, or Lauren slaving away at the mall, Alana making her daily commute. The nights are the worse. I miss everyone the most then, in the calm silence that I’ve seen of Germany.
We haven’t really done much since being here. Got to the airport, got shuffled around like the sleep-deprived zombies we were, got onto a bus and found ourselves passing onto base. There was minimal running around that first day, checking in with the unit, checking into the hotel, getting a mailbox. I guess I’m not surprised that our hotel room immediately turned into a messy disaster. There are overfull vacuum bags everywhere with clothes trying to escape.
Miscellaneous items we couldn’t separate from that are strewn about without any dedicated location. I can’t wait until we get a place. This hotel is temporary and even though it’s very nice, I want a home. We went to briefings the second day we were here and learned about the ever-growing list of things we needed to do in order to settle down. It’s a toss-up between the most important items, a phone or a home. I’m dying to text someone, anyone to just feel normal again.
Matt has a German prepaid cell-phone (or Handy as it’s called here :]), but we just figured out the number last night. It’s a quick-fix until we commit to an actual company and I finally get an iphone(!). After the briefings, we got set-up with an appointment with housing that put us on a list to get an apartment. We are third on the list which translates to two weeks of suite living at the Army Lodge.
I’m hoping to get over jet-lag soon because falling asleep at 2pm every day and waking up at 4am is really just not cutting it anymore. Due to my awful sleeping habits, I haven’t ventured out much, and therefore Matt hasn’t either. He’s gone to the PX but other than that we’re pretty caged in unless we take a bus out. Being Saturday, Matt proposed to go out into town and I’m hoping to see some Christmas markets & catch it with the camera. Also on our to-do list today is to finally get our phones. When it happens, I’ll set up an event on facebook with my phone number in case anyone needs to reach me. We made friends with a super nice couple here and went bowling with them on base last night. It was awesome because myself and the other wife used bumpers the entire game J
So I guess that’s life so far. Nothing terribly exciting, but today should get the ball rolling. The scenery is beautiful, everyone was right about that. It reminds me of a mossy Dublin which is comforting. The cold isn’t as crazy as we thought, but this time last year had two feet of snow, so we got lucky. More to come soon!
Dirty room + confusing buttons = angry Alicia
Germans are too tall. I can barely see myself in the mirror, and my feet don't touch the ground when I'm sitting.
This is what they use to flush toilets. Small side for little flushes, big side for big flushes. :/
This is why I'm here. That messy guy over there.

This is the view outside of window. Germany is pretty breathtaking in the morning light, I will have to admit. <3

Post Packing

I will catch you all up to what I experienced in my last moments of Dublin, family and friends...

My room in all its empty glory!
Some of the greatest barista's I know!

Some thoughts on moving...

There are so many crazy things going on this year it’s hard to keep track. We got married, Matt graduated & has a job in the military, I am unemployed for the first time, and craziest of all- we’re moving to Germany. Growing up with a large family all within walking distance can be pretty daunting at times, but I wouldn’t trade them for the world. We all live in Dublin, and we all grew up here. Three generations separated by only two stop signs & a few signal lights, until the middle of this year.
While I might be the first grandchild to really leave, Matt and I are not the only to move. A couple months back, my aunt Pam moved away. It was heart-wrenching to see their house get packed up, and even worse knowing that they are living states away. Recently, I’ve been able to connect Pam more than ever through our experiences. This is opportunity of a lifetime, but I’m still terrified. All I have ever known is California and the bay area.
Luckily, I married the most supportive person I know. Matt keeps me sane by constantly reminding me how wonderful this chapter of our life can be. Germany is at our disposal, and we should take it while we can. Now, only being 22, we have time to travel, see things we’ve never seen, totally immerse ourselves in another culture, and finally spend some real time together. While we still don’t know what to expect, we always have each other, and I’m both thankful and blessed for that very reason.

Here We Go!

It's official. The movers are here, and the world is turning more upside down with every taped box. After today, we live from our suitcases and see each new day as an adventure before us. Matt & Alicia take Germany, Pt. 1!
This is my sister Christina & my mom Michelle. This is also the night before the movers came.
Matthew doing what he does best. :)
My other sister (sorta), Robin, with precious little Teeka. Notice Matt's luggage :( .
Getting ready for movie time! This is kinda what my room used to look like.
 Empty drawers are so awkward!
Me looking quite glamorous at 1:30am trying to get our stuff together for the movers.
I'm surprised my mom hasn't killed us for turning our living room into an extended storage unit. Love you mom!
The bags I will live out of :(
Hallway of doom. :)

More pictures to come of what my house turned into without all of our stuff in it!
